This morning, I was on an Air New Zealand flight, and they started handing out the flight snacks. As they passed our aisle, and offered dried fruit, veggie chips, or muesli bars, the woman next to me said to the steward, “Actually, can I have TWO packs of dried fruit?” And the steward gave them to her, and made some joke about “double or nothing”. THEN she asked for another two things – two muesli bars. And the steward gave them to her, winked, and said, “You don’t ask, you don’t get, aye.

We were all moved by Adele’s speech - “a message from the founders” at our awards evening last week.

Adele speaks with such insight, passion, affection and intelligence, she’s an absolute delight to listen to.

Thank you Adele, for coming all the way from London to celebrate with us.

Workshop Report: A room full of experts

yMedia Management crew member, and PR expert, Tim Holmberg reports back:

Last Wednesday marked the eighth and final workshop for this year’s yMedia Challenge and it was great to see a majority of the teams taking part in our “Room Full of Professionals”. For two hours we crammed a load of fantastic industry minds all into one room for our challenge participants to plumb for information, advice and help. The Challenge officially closes next Monday so this was the perfect opportunity for the students to get an industry opinion on their final touches and troubleshoot any issues that they have been having. With a diverse range of skills and knowledge, ranging from design to public relations to marketing to development, our students were in good hands and many of them were in deep discussion about their projects right until the end of the workshop. At the workshop we also had the extreme joy of handing out invitations to our yMedia Graduation Awards Dinner to all of the team members - We can’t wait to celebrate all of the astounding work that is being produced!

AND SO IT ALL BEGAN…

The 2010 yMedia Challenge officially launched on Monday 14th of June; and this year it’s bigger than ever with 20 teams competing! In fact, it’s so big that yMedia needed to move to a larger venue than planned (thanks AUT) to accommodate everyone involved.

It began with AUT Business School’s 7th floor fizzing with anticipation as the yMedia crew set up and the 160 people involved in this year’s challenge arrived and awaited the announcement of who they’d be paired with for the next eight weeks.

At first everyone sat around trying not to make eye-contact with each-other, but a quick ice-breaker soon had everyone off their feet, and the room humming with conversation as people rushed to get to know each-other and complete their sheet the fastest. Claims have been made that Lawerence Brock from Shift (one of this year’s Mentors) was running around the room, knocking over women and children to complete his sheet first!

After everyone was picked up and brushed off, proceedings began with all the appropriate thank-you’s and housekeeping from co-directors Eddy & Jade. And then it was the moment that everyone had been waiting for, team announcement time. Despite stumbling over a few names, the teams were announced quickly, and it was with excitement that everyone moved into their groups to find out all they could about each-other.

While the evening began with some off-standish trepidation, it wasn’t long before each of the 20 newly formed teams were talking like old friends, planning for the success of their group and conspiring to beat out everyone else involved. To date we’ve counted a total of 20 teams that are adamant that their project will outshine all others. We can see already that the judges are going to have a tough time on judging day!

After two hours of getting to know each-other, running through the top 10 questions and starting to define briefs it was time to call it a night; although many teams didn’t seem to want to leave. As people eventually did leave, meeting times were made for the conspiring  continue, and the fizz of anticipation from the beginning of the night transformed into a full blown bubble of excitement for what’s to come over the next eight weeks.

Setting up a Tumblr Blog

This year, every team participating in the yMedia Challenge will have it’s own Tumblr Blog, updates from which will be pulled through to the team’s profile page on our website.

For the Students, all you need to do is visit www.tumblr.com, enter your email address, a password, and choose a blog username or URL. You can then start posting to your blog!

You might like to get things started with a post about your team - who are you? Why did you choose to join the Challenge? What do you hope to achieve?

If you like, you can choose a theme from the Tumblr theme library to change the look of your blog. While you won’t get “extra credit” for customising your blog with a theme of your own creation, you are most welcome to create something a little more unique.

Some of the deliverables for the yMedia Challenge require a corresponding blog post - check the Student Guide for more information on these.

Happy blogging!
