It’s all on tomorrow! There are still places available for the inspirational NZ Community Economic Development Conference that is being held in Waitakere, Auckland on 19/20 April. The final conference programme is now online with 50 presenters over seven plenary and 35 workshops.

If you are interested in resilient, empowered and financially sustainable communities through social enterprise and community owned assets – this two day conference is a feast that is not to be missed!

In addition to presentations, the conference will effectively create a two day learning community –through the many discussions and debates at workshops, open space, chats between sessions and of course, in the bar! Register now - Download registration form here.

Some conference highlights:

  • How can CED help Rebuild Communities Post Disaster?
In Lyttelton, a well developed community infrastructure that has partly been developed through time banking has helped the community to help itself post quake. A presenter from Lyttelton will be presenting a workshop called “Lyttelton in the midst of chaos - and the role of time banking in nurturing and rebuilding our community”And Lindsay Jeffs from Christchurch Small Business Enterprise Centre will be making a presentation about how CED approach could rebuild a sustainable, resilient Christchurch.

  • Maori programme
Maori Trusts are old hands at social enterprise and community owned assets. This is reflected in the conference programme that includes a number of presentations from Maori practitioners includingNgarimu Blair from Ngati Whatua, Wiremu Doherty  from Te Whare Wananga o Awanuiarangi,Rachell Mio from Awhi Credit Union,  Ella Henry from AUT plus Aboriginal Leader, Dennis Foleywho will be presenting (with Ella)  about “Indigenous Emancipation: Out of the Dominant Economy”.

  • Politics in a lunchbox!
Renowned blogger and media personality, Bomber Bradbury, will chair a session with Metiria Turia from the Green Party, David Parker from  Labour,  Tau Henare from  National and a representative from the Maori Party who will speak to their respective party policies relative to community economic development. Overseas experience indicates that the role of government is principally an enabling one through empowering legislation and development of innovative ways of supporting the resourcing of CED initiatives, including resource for a community driven infrastructure to support and capacity build this emergent sector… And much more here

Coming to a city near you! These incredibly inspiring, global Kiwi’s are just not to be missed!

Winging their way home for a series of exciting, dynamic and hugely inspirational presentations, these are some of our most successful and entrepreneurial NZers who all have a fairytale or two to tell - Auckland and Wellington are the lucky recipients so be sure to get in quick smart!

In order to tease you just a little –

Talk about shooting for the stars! Being a finalist in the NASA Astronaut Selection while aiming to become New Zealand’s first astronaut (and in between running marathons),Dr Karen Willcox found herself heading up an incredible, NASA-funded research team at MIT designing environmentally sensitive aircraft. As if that wasn’t enough, learning 3 new languages got the nod as well!

Marketing Chief at Virgin Airlines yet not content on showing up to the Cannes Film Festival with her rather savvy, entrepreneurial boss Sir Richard Branson, Sarah Robb-O’Hagan decided to start dealing with the world’s fastest man. Not only that, but she’s been working with him (Usain Bolt) to re-invigorate one of the world’s best known sports drinks, Gatorade – and it’s bolted.

From Fielding, New Zealand to fielding calls from global heavyweights (hundreds of them), Michael Boustridge commands the multi-billion dollar BT Global business and has friends in very high (and far-off) places. Sitting on the board of the educational not-for-profit XPRIZE Foundation, large incentives are offered to those trying to solve the delicate problems of our time.

What better way to spend your time?

Auckland Startup Weekend

This event is one of many which will come through the yMedia blog now that the Challenge is over. You can always check out what’s available by visiting: http://news.ymedia.co.nz/tagged/events

“The 54 hour startup event provides the networking, resource and incentives for individuals and teams to go from idea to launch, with a programme centered on action, innovation, education and mentoring,” says Jason Armishaw, one of the organisers with Microsoft, the Biz Dojo and Valentine Addis – Venture Catalyst.

“It starts on the Friday night (April 1st, 2011) with pitches through to testing, business model development and basic prototype creation, culminating on Sunday night demos to a panel of potential investors and serial entrepreneurs, including guys who have gone from whoa to go with successful web companies.”

We’re looking for people (developers, business managers, startup enthusiasts, marketers, designers) to come along and sink their teeth into it. Tickets are $90, or $49 for students which includes 7 meals and drinks all weekend.

Neighbours Day Aotearoa

This event is one of many which will come through the yMedia blog now that the Challenge is over. You can always check out what’s available by visiting: http://news.ymedia.co.nz/tagged/events

Neighbours Day Aotearoa is all about building fun, safe, respectful, friendly Kiwi neighbourhoods.

We believe strong neighbourhoods are the building blocks for a strong New Zealand.

We are promoting Neighbours Day Aotearoa in the last weekend of March 26th-27th (this weekend!) as a time for Kiwis to focus on appreciating and getting to know our neighbours.

We want to encourage all New Zealanders to make time in the last weekend of March to connect with their neighbours - a smile or wave, a chat over the fence, a cuppa with one or two neighbours or something with the whole street.

Please sign up to the website to show your support – The website has heaps of ideas and tools to help anyone make contact with their neighbours this weekend (or any weekend!).

The 2010 yMedia Awards Dinner

yMedia co-founder Adele shares her highlights of the awards evening.

Thursday, 19th August wrapped up the biggest and best year yet of the yMedia Challenge. Seeing the Floating Pavilion transformed into sparkling glasses, fairy lights, laughter and applause was pretty cool. Even cooler was observing the nervous anticipation of the participants – it almost felt like a warped version of the (digital, Kiwi, youth) Oscars.

MC Simon Pound guided everyone through the evening, obviously having done his research. It’s no easy feat to sum up the sweat, blood and tears that went into each project, in only a few sentences – but he smoothly introduced each team’s work.

What was really rewarding, was to see so many of those who had once been students participating in the Challenge, come back as agency mentors.

The funniest bits of the evening included the impromptu ‘thank-you’ speeches from the various winners (or the sheer horror they directed towards the microphone, and the speed at which they shyly, silently scurried offstage).

All in all, it was the ideal finale to a Challenge that produced some of yMedia’s best work yet. I gushed enough about Eddy, Jade, and the management team during my speech, but the Awards night, as well as the event in general, demonstrated how they have turned a new chapter in yMedia’s history.

Having been limited to watching from the sidelines this year, experiencing the Challenge only via my Macbook in London, it was fantastic and surreal to be able to meet participants in the flesh and experience the energy that comes from being in the room during Awards night. That energy is indescribable – I don’t think I was the only one in the room who felt very lucky to be part of something incredible.

Workshop Report: A room full of experts

yMedia Management crew member, and PR expert, Tim Holmberg reports back:

Last Wednesday marked the eighth and final workshop for this year’s yMedia Challenge and it was great to see a majority of the teams taking part in our “Room Full of Professionals”. For two hours we crammed a load of fantastic industry minds all into one room for our challenge participants to plumb for information, advice and help. The Challenge officially closes next Monday so this was the perfect opportunity for the students to get an industry opinion on their final touches and troubleshoot any issues that they have been having. With a diverse range of skills and knowledge, ranging from design to public relations to marketing to development, our students were in good hands and many of them were in deep discussion about their projects right until the end of the workshop. At the workshop we also had the extreme joy of handing out invitations to our yMedia Graduation Awards Dinner to all of the team members - We can’t wait to celebrate all of the astounding work that is being produced!

yMedia Workshop #08: A Room Full of Professionals

Venue: AUT Business School, Level 6

Date: Wednesday 28 July, 6pm – 8pm

As the close of the yMedia Challenge draws near, we invite all teams to join us for a working session at AUT Business School.

The room will be full of professionals with technical skills, available to help resolve any difficulties you may be having with your project, the Judges will be represented to share with you what will be expected of you on judging day, and the yMedia Crew will also be on hand to help iron out any issues and to help ensure you’re ready for your final deadline.

This workshop is an opportunity not to be missed by the teams participating in the yMedia Challenge.

What Is News?

Who: Helen Sissons, senior lecturer of journalism at AUT

When: 6-8pm Wednesday 14th July

Where: Media Design School, Level 12, 242 Queen Street

What: In a world driven by information and news, it is often hard to get your message heard over the babble. Understanding why some stories make the cut, and some don’t, will help you on your way to gaining coverage for your cause.

In this workshop we will show you how to uncover and target your newsworthy message and grab journalists’ attention. You will also learn some best practice techniques when it comes to actually writing your story into a press release.

More about Helen: Helen has an extensive background in both the practice and teaching of News Journalism.

After working five years as a reporter for local and national newspapers in Britain and the United States she moved to the BBC where she spent 10 years reporting for television and radio news. From 1996 she incorporated her work with the BBC with lecturing in News Journalism at the University of Leeds.

In 2006 Helen published a textbook – Practical Journalism: How to Write News (Sage, London) and in 2007 she joined AUT’s School of Communication Studies.

Helen’s particular field of research is the effect on journalistic practice and news product of increased PR-isation and media convergence.

Many Minds Make Right Work

Who: Running with Scissors Creative Strategist, and yMedia Challenge Judge, Friday O’Flaherty

When: 6-8pm Wednesday 30th June

Where: Media Design School, Level 12, 242 Queen Street

What: There are always a number of ways to approach any project, and the most obvious answer isn’t always right. Friday believes that great ideas can be anything, and can come from anywhere – but there is an art to delivering ideas that meet the needs of a brief.

During this workshop, Friday will share his experience within the creative industries, talk through some of the practices that his agency now adopts to apply lateral thinking to any project and identify some techniques that can be used to assess ideas to help deliver the best possible outcome.

Meet Your Teams!

What: The next event in the yMedia Calendar is the team meet & greet, which is also a working session.

When: Monday 14th June

Where: Venue TBC

All teams will be announced online, and advised by email, prior to this working session. If you are lucky enough to be selected to participate, this event is where you will begin to formulate your brief.

There will be plenty of opportunity to talk with the crew, as well as past yMedia Challenge participants, and to ask any questions about this year’s process.
